BMW 530i

Calling the BMW 530i the 5 Series base model is a gross understatement of the 530i's amenities. Available with either standard rear-wheel drive or BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive system, the 530i is powered by very capable yet relatively unassuming 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Gas mileage is impressive for a sedan of this size: the 530i is EPA-rated at 24 mpg city and 34 mpg highway (RWD) or 23 mpg city and 33 mpg highway (AWD).

BMW 530e iPerformance

The 530e is a new model in the 5 Series lineup for 2017. This plug-in hybrid 5 Series pairs a 2.0-liter twin-turbo four-cylinder with a 111 horsepower electric motor that's powered by a very efficient, high-voltage lithium-ion battery to produce a total of 248 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of low-end torque, and an impressive fuel-economy rating of 117 mpg-e and 28 miles of pure electric range.

BMW 540i

The 540i ups the ante in terms of engine performance. The 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 delivers a notable boost, to 335 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. Rumor has it that the 540i will vault from 0-60 mph in just 4.9 seconds.

BMW M550i

If you have real need for speed, or at least high performance in the passing lane, consider the top-end, performance-tuned M550i. It features an extremely competent 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine that pumps out 445 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque and rockets from 0-60 mph in a breath-taking (especially for a car of this size) 3.9 seconds. The suspension, transmission, wheels and brakes have all been optimized to enable the M550i to deliver optimal results, whether taking laps on the racetrack or piloting the sedan around winding, backcountry roads.
