Imagine the feeling of leaning into a drift behind the wheel of a 600-horsepower sports car.

Now imagine doing that for eight straight hours.

It seems beyond imagination; but for BMW driving instructor Johan Schwartz, it was just a pretty exciting Monday.

About the Records

Back in 2013, Johan Schwartz broke the original world record for “Greatest Distance Vehicle Drift”, in a 2013 BMW M5 sedan, at 51.28 miles--since then, the record has been claimed by others in different vehicles.

Schwartz and BMW knew there was no better way to celebrate the debut of the all-new, designed 2018 BMW M5 than with a shot at getting that record back.

In December, at the BMW Performance Center in Greer, SC, Schwartz did the unbelievable, and beat the record by a jaw-dropping amount, solidly securing the Guinness World Records™ title for Longest Vehicle Drift in 8 Hours for BMW.

The previous record set was 89.55 miles of drift in 8 hours.

The new record?

232.5 miles.

To do this, BMW had to create a refueling system specifically for the new BMW M5, and the 600-horsepower customized sedan underwent five successful refueling connections mid-drift during the eight-hour drift.

A perk? Because the two massively-powerful sports sedans had to be close by for the refueling, BMW was able to lock down a second record: Guinness World Records™ title for Longest Vehicle Drift (water-assisted), at 49.25 miles over just an hour.

(We'd love to know what the 2018 BMW M5's tires looked like after all that.)
