If you've been keeping an eye out for the next BMW X5, the wait is almost over. Here's what's actually changing on the redesigned 2027 model, from an all-new electric variant to a completely reworked cabin.

The 2027 BMW X5 arrives with five available drive systems, including the first all-electric iX5 with an estimated 435-mile range. The redesigned SAV begins reaching dealers in October 2026, with additional powertrains following through 2027, starting at a manufacturer MSRP of $69,800.

Our team at BMW of Kansas City South has followed the X5 through generations of updates, and drivers across Kansas City, Overland Park, Olathe, and Shawnee are already asking what's next. This guide breaks down the new design, the technology, and every powertrain, so you know what to expect before the 2027 X5 reaches our showroom.

Key Points: 2027 BMW X5 Features Near Kansas City

  • Five powertrains, one lineup. The 2027 BMW X5 becomes the first BMW to offer five distinct drive systems, ranging from a mild-hybrid inline-six to the fully electric iX5.

  • The iX5 addresses range anxiety directly. BMW estimates up to 435 miles of range on the iX5 60 xDrive, backed by an estimated 22-minute charge time from 10 to 80 percent.

  • The rollout starts close to home. BMW of Kansas City South expects the first 2027 X5 models, beginning with the X5 40 xDrive, in October 2026, with more variants following through the year.

2027 BMW X5 Lineup at a Glance

Five powertrains is a lot to sort through, and we get that. Here's how the 2027 BMW X5 lineup breaks down before we go deeper on each one.

Model

Powertrain

Key Spec

Starting MSRP

Why It Matters

X5 40

RWD, mild hybrid I6

394 hp

$69,800

The lowest starting price in the 2027 lineup, for drivers who don't need AWD.

X5 40 xDrive

AWD, mild hybrid I6

394 hp

$72,100

Same power as the X5 40, but with all-wheel drive standard, worth the difference once winter weather hits the KC metro.

X5 50e xDrive

Plug-in hybrid, AWD

483 hp system, est. 44-mi EV range

$77,500

Covers most Kansas City commutes on electricity alone, with the gas engine as backup for longer drives.

iX5 60 xDrive

Battery electric, AWD

570 hp, est. 435-mi range

$79,800

The most power in the confirmed lineup, plus enough estimated range to make longer trips realistic.

Prices shown are manufacturer starting MSRP and exclude the $1,450 destination and handling charge, taxes, title, and dealer fees. Range and performance figures are preliminary BMW estimates based on EPA testing procedures. Contact BMW of Kansas City South for current availability and pricing.

A few things stand out here. The all-electric iX5 actually costs less than the plug-in hybrid X5 50e, despite nearly 100 more horsepower and a much longer electric-only range. That flips the usual assumption that going fully electric costs more. For Kansas City area drivers still deciding between gas and electric, the 50e's estimated 44-mile electric range covers most commutes on battery power alone, with the six-cylinder ready for longer trips. Two more variants are still on the way: an M Performance V8 model and the hydrogen-powered iX5 Hydrogen, both later in 2027.

What's New in 2027 BMW X5 Design and the Neue Klasse Cabin

A Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) is BMW's own term for a vehicle that blends SUV-style proportions with on-road driving dynamics, used since the original X5 launched in 1999. The 2027 redesign brings a taller, upright front end and a vertically aligned kidney grille called Iconic Glow, lit day and night. New double-X light icons combine the headlights, daytime running lights, and turn signals into one unit, a first for BMW.

Inside, Neue Klasse design brings reduced surfaces, a backlit ambient light strip wrapping door to door, and an available slate-and-glass trim called BMW Individual Clear & Bold. Wheels go up to 23 inches for the first time on an X5.

BMW Panoramic iDrive: The Technology Behind the 2027 X5

BMW Panoramic iDrive is the new display and operating system built into every 2027 X5, running on BMW Operating System X. BMW Panoramic Vision spans the base of the windshield, keeping speed and navigation data in view without blocking the road. A 17.9-inch free-cut Central Display handles touch controls, and the multifunction steering wheel lights up only the controls that are actually available, an approach BMW calls shy-tech.

The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant now includes Amazon's Alexa+ technology, a large language model that responds to natural conversation instead of fixed voice commands. The optional 14.6-inch BMW Passenger Screen adds front-seat streaming and video calls, with a camera that dims the screen if it detects driver distraction.

The All-Electric BMW iX5: Range, Charging, and Performance

The 2027 BMW iX5 60 xDrive is the first-ever battery-electric BMW X5, built on BMW's sixth-generation eDrive technology. Estimated range reaches up to 435 miles, with two motors producing a combined 570 horsepower and an estimated 4.4-second 0-to-60 time. Its 800-volt architecture charges at up to 460 kW, so a 10-to-80-percent charge takes an estimated 22 minutes, and a native NACS port gives it Tesla Supercharger access without an adapter.

For Kansas City winters, the iX5 includes a standard heat pump that helps preserve range in the cold, and it supports bidirectional charging, so it can power a home during an outage or charge another electric vehicle.

Combustion, Plug-In Hybrid, and What's Still to Come

Not every 2027 X5 buyer wants to go electric, and BMW built the lineup around that. The X5 40 and X5 40 xDrive use an updated 3.0-liter inline-six with 48V mild hybrid support, producing 394 horsepower and an estimated 4.8-second 0-to-60 with all-wheel drive. The X5 50e xDrive pairs that engine with a plug-in electric motor for 483 combined horsepower and an estimated 44 miles of electric-only range, enough for most Kansas City area commutes on battery alone.

Two more variants are still ahead: a V8-powered M Performance model later in 2027, and the hydrogen-powered iX5 Hydrogen, BMW's first hydrogen production vehicle, further down the road. Pricing for both is unannounced.

Which 2027 BMW X5 Powertrain Fits Your Kansas City Drive?

The right powertrain depends on how you drive. A few starting points:

  • Daily commuter who wants simplicity: The X5 40 xDrive delivers proven inline-six performance with all-wheel drive for four-season confidence.

  • Want to cut gas use without range anxiety: The X5 50e xDrive covers most short trips on electricity alone, with the gas engine as backup for longer drives.

  • Ready to go fully electric: The iX5 60 xDrive offers an estimated 435 miles of range and Supercharger access for confident long-distance driving.

  • Want maximum performance: The M Performance V8 variant, arriving later in 2027, is built for drivers who want the most power in the lineup.
