The First Electric X5, Built in South Carolina
The 2027 BMW iX5 is assembled at BMW Plant Spartanburg, the same South Carolina facility that has built every X5 since the model launched in 1999. It's a milestone for the plant: the iX5 is the first all-electric vehicle ever built there. A new high-voltage battery facility nearby in Woodruff, South Carolina, supports iX5 production and runs without fossil fuels for normal operations.
Visually, the iX5 carries the same Iconic Glow grille and double-X lighting as the rest of the 2027 X5 lineup, but with a continuous front-apron design in place of the horizontal air intakes on gas-powered models, giving it a more streamlined, distinctly electric look.
BMW iX5 Range and Battery: What's Actually New
BMW built the iX5's battery around new 120-millimeter cylindrical cells, taller than the 95-millimeter cells used in the BMW iX3 but sharing the same chemistry. The added height alone raises usable cell energy by an estimated 30 percent. Those cells connect directly into the battery pack with a cell-to-pack design, skipping the module step most EVs use, which helps reduce both weight and cost.
A new in-house system called Energy Master manages the battery's electronics and power distribution. Every iX5 also includes a model-specific heat pump, which matters for Kansas City winters since cold temperatures typically cut into an EV's real-world range.
Charging the BMW iX5: Speed, Supercharger Access, and Bidirectional Power
The iX5 supports DC fast charging at up to 460 kW, so an estimated 10-to-80-percent charge takes about 22 minutes, and 10 minutes at a fast charger adds an estimated 170 miles. The iX5 also comes with a native NACS charging port, plugging directly into the Tesla Supercharger network without an adapter.
Every iX5 includes bidirectional charging as standard. Bidirectional charging is a capability that lets an EV's battery send power back out, not just receive it, so the iX5 can run household devices, back up a home during a power outage, or charge another electric vehicle. BMW Maps also automatically warms or cools the battery when it detects the driver is headed to a DC fast charger, helping the iX5 charge faster once it arrives.
iX5 Performance: Does It Still Feel Like a BMW?
The iX5 uses two electric motors, one on each axle, for a combined 570 horsepower and 593 lb-ft of torque. The rear motor is an electrically excited synchronous motor built specifically for the iX5's 800-volt system, adjusting its magnetic field to the driving situation for efficiency at low loads and strong torque under acceleration.
The front motor can disengage entirely at lower loads, letting the iX5 run on the rear motor alone to save energy. Together, they push the iX5 to an estimated 60 mph in 4.4 seconds. BMW's new Heart of Joy system, developed fully in-house, adjusts the drive, brakes, steering, and recuperation up to ten times faster than prior systems. The iX5 is also available with rear-wheel steering for the first time, which BMW says helps stabilize a trailer while towing.
